My opinion
There are many writers available on the Net. I chose Fitzgerald after several experiments with other ones. I can judge only on the base of what I have read and what I know about the author. I think this kind of literature, which deals with people in a time and their problems (love, money and social position), can be quite useful but cannot be read for a longer time. Yet it seems to me as a very useful source of experience of relations among (young) people! That is the reason I favour Fitzgerald for. If I had to definitely select between Fitzgerald and Hemingway, after a long lingering I would say „The latter has its place in a shelf of my bookcase.“ (Soldier`s Home is what decided). So, to sum up, what I profoundly appreciate are the stories of people that remind me my own situation and problems. When reading his stories, I get an idea of what to do or at least I see there is why to be optimistic.

Reading Fitzgerald short-stories offers an interesting idea: compare the reality of the stories with your notion of the Czechoslovak Republic (avantgard in art, left political wing prevails, growing economic power - a well-to-do country and society (!), …still feelable tensions between nations, especially after the Depression).
